Here's the Deal

I forgot to take pictures during the final phase of our dining room makeover.

It's hard to paint correctly and hold a camera.  Let alone paint at a standard high enough to please my husband.

I'd already had some drips so things weren't going great.

And for some reason we decided to tempt fate and never put a drop cloth down.  Call us crazy.  Or gamblers.  Or just plain stupid.

I'll go with stupid because I ended up scraping up all the little teeny tiny flecks of paint this afternoon.  On the bright side, our dining room floor has never been cleaner.

Friday night before we went to bed we painted the alcove.  Much to some people's chagrin.  And to that I say tough...they can learn to love it because we do.  It's only paint.  Heck, I could repaint it once a week.  But I'm not going to.

Before we painted the alcove I painted the entire paneling once - with one coat of paint.

Saturday we had a rainy day here in Omaha so it was good to be inside.  That and the threat of hail and tornado's does something to discourage errands and other fun activities.

Here's where I didn't take any pictures.  So you don't have to wade through multiple pictures of half finished wall paint.  You just get to see the end product.

Not too shabby, huh?

We're also working on new curtain rods, because the valence isn't going back up in both the living room and dining room.

Enter the best deal ever.

About a month or two ago, Dave and I were wandering the aisles of Lowe's and came across some clearance curtain rods. Allen+Roth curtain rods.

The ones that are normally $69...

And we got two - one for $9.12 and another for $12.32.  Yes.  I'm not kidding.  Now is not the time to kid.

However they were a black color with a gold accent in the grooves.  They must not sell them anymore - that color option at least - because all I could find was the picture below.
However, we wanted ours to match the paint color of the paneling.  So while at Menard's we found Rustoleum Spray Paint in Canvas White that matched the paneling paint color almost exactly.

Yahtzee!

The garage became the painting booth because of the rain.  And the bucket was our "ladder."

Did I mention I'm married to a Safety Manager?  I tried calling him out on it, but he claims that it's OSHA approved.  I'm not 100% sold.  Though I had used the same bucket as a seat during panel painting on Friday so who's one to judge?

So now we need to trim out the living room windows.  That's our Sunday plans.

And I'm on a quest to find unfinished wood curtain rings...that are NO WHERE TO BE FOUND. Pardon the hostility.

I'm sure this is an impossible task since we need ones that are at least 2.25" in diameter to fit over the 2" rod.  No big deal, right?

I've searched any place I can think of in town and have come up empty handed.  And frustrated.

And ready to start whittling my own.

Because I want to paint them.  And hang them up.

Patience is NOT my virtue.

But now I'll give you the before and after picture from when we moved into the house...

And in progress...September of 2011...

And now...(just disregard the extra table leaves leaning against the wall, the crapola on the couch and zero curtains).

Oh and did I mention...we're painting the outside of our house next weekend.

On our own.

I feel like throwing myself off the roof, just enough to mame myself so I'm unable to help.

Such a positive thought to leave you with.

Big Smile.

  6. I too found you through Better After.

Like you, I have painted the alcove in my dining room another color. I wish my alcove was as deep as yours... I'm on a never ending quest to find a very shallow (10") buffet. I'm actually thinking of making my own out of upper cabinets... but not till I sell one of our two houses. I refuse to spend more money right now.

Also..... like I think you care... my husband is Chief of Safety at his Airforce Base... yesterday I caught him standing on one of our swivel bar stools. I told him I was going to take a picture and send it to the General. He didn't think I was funny! ;-)

Seriously... I love your blog and will be following!

    1. Oh Susan...I'm sure we have many of the same stories to tell about our "safety husbands." I'm constantly asking him at home..."is that safe?" Knowing full well that it's not!

Let me know if you do the narrow buffet out of upper cabinets! We've toyed with the idea of doing that downstairs in our basement to put the TV on but have some storage.

  7. Love the wainscoting on the walls! What material did you use? Was it only 1/8" thick? I'm at a loss of the best material to use for DIY wains... Thanks!

  8. Hi Melissa - we used MDF as it was the cheaper option and best since it was getting painted over (not stained!). Our boards were 3/4" thick. So we have some depth on our walls but not too much that they stick out too far!

  10. Hey Francesca! That mirror is acutally from a store in Atichson, KS called Nell Hills. They also have a store in Kansas City as well. I bought it about 8 years ago or so there. But give them a call or email...they've got a ton of great stuff. Their website is www.nellhills.com
